Holding It Together: What Men Often Carry in Silence
Rooted: Embracing a moment of reflection this week.

THIS WEEK

Behind the scrubs, the badge, the uniform — there is a human heart that was never meant to carry this much alone. This line has been moving through this community all week, and it didn't land the way it did by accident. It landed because it's true. This week marks something I've been working toward for a long time: the launch of You Were Never Meant to Carry It All, a compassion fatigue and resilience journaling workbook written specifically for caregivers, healthcare professionals, and first responders. This letter is your first look inside.

A NOTE FROM LIZ

To the ones who show up, shift after shift…

There is a particular kind of tired that doesn't go away with sleep. It lives in the body — in the tightness that doesn't release after you leave work, in the thoughts that replay long after the shift has ended, in the emotional weight of witnessing what you witness, day after day, and still showing up the next morning.

What I've learned from working with healthcare professionals, first responders, and caregivers is that this kind of tired is not weakness. It is not evidence that you chose the wrong profession or that you care too much. It is a human response to sustained exposure to suffering — and it has a name. Compassion fatigue is real, it is measurable, and most importantly, it is something you can move through.

You Were Never Meant to Carry It All was created for you. It is not about what you're doing wrong. It is meant as a space for you to slow down, put words to what you've been holding, and begin to carry it differently.

Your well-being matters just as much as the care you provide.

This workbook is a place for you to start believing that.

THIS WEEK'S THEME:

Excerpt from: You Were Never Meant to Carry It All by Lisett Figueroa, LPC, NCC, PMH-C

Chapter 1: When Caring Takes a Toll

The Weight You Carry

The work you do requires presence, compassion, and the ability to show up for others during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. But behind that role is you — a human being who feels, absorbs, and is impacted by what you witness.

Secondary traumatic stress occurs when healthcare professionals, first responders, and caregivers are repeatedly exposed to the trauma, suffering, and grief of others. Even when the experiences are not your own, your nervous system and emotional world can respond as if they are. You may notice emotional exhaustion, intrusive thoughts, or a heightened stress response over time.

When these experiences are not processed, they don't simply disappear — they begin to build. This is what we call emotional accumulation. Each moment, each loss, each story adds to the weight you carry. Over time, this can lead to compassion fatigue, burnout, and a sense of feeling overwhelmed or disconnected.

Recognizing this is not a sign of weakness — it is awareness. Awareness is where healing begins.

Signs to Look For

You may be experiencing secondary traumatic stress or emotional accumulation if you notice:

•       Feeling emotionally drained or depleted after shifts

•       Intrusive thoughts or replaying patient experiences

•       Increased irritability or difficulty concentrating

•       Persistent anxiety or a sense of being “on edge”

•       Emotional numbness or detachment

•       Difficulty sleeping or unwinding after work

•       Feeling overwhelmed, helpless, or questioning your impact

JOURNAL PROMPTS

Quick Self-Check from Chapter 1: When Caring Takes a Toll: The Weight You Carry

Take a moment to reflect:

•       What symptoms have I noticed in myself recently?

•       When do I feel this the most — during work, after work, or at home?

•       What emotions might I be pushing aside or not fully processing?

This week's additional reflection: What would it mean to acknowledge what this work costs me — without using it as a reason to stop caring?

Whatever came up for you: that awareness is not a small thing.

It is the beginning of something.
